Skill Acquisition and The Nigerian Youths

Acquisition of skills is the ability to learn or develop competencies. It includes learning a new skill, practicing a way of doing things that are normally gained through training or experience. The importance of acquiring useful skills for youth, in particular, cannot be overemphasized as it is a way to make a decent living and at the same time offers incentives for prospective young entrepreneurs to set up, operate and manage their enterprises and indirectly support the national economy.

One of the country’s industries’ effect is equipping Nigerian youth and developing the mentality to take the risk of venturing into applying the knowledge and skills acquired from their various schools. Industrial activities in Nigeria are able to have significant impacts on the country’s economy and people’s standard of living.

Nigeria has an 80 million youth population, which accounts for 60 percent of the total population. When industries are developed, it shows how different acquisitions of skills can benefit them and society at large. The creation of industries in the country, both in the private sector and the public sector, will undoubtedly create job opportunities for the citizen of the country, most notably the newly graduated and the youths at large.

As the youth entrepreneurial capacity is developed, the economy is strengthened as it contributes directly to the socio-economic development process through the production of indigenous expertise and also helps tackle youth unemployment.

The point must be made that nations do not just become great. Greatness is assured only on the heels of concerted investment in their people. Therefore, for Nigeria to emerge as a great nation, as commensurate with its latent capacity, investment in people and skills has to be assessed. This will, of course, be with a view to developing fully comparative strength and positioning areas for global significance.
